Outpost Estates Real Estate
Location: Directly east of Runyon Canyon Park along Outpost Drive from Hollywood Blvd to Mulholland Drive.
Outpost was among the first Hollywood luxury developments of the 1920's. Harrison Grey Otis, owner of the Los Angeles Times, built a clubhouse in the Canyon and named it "The Outpost," from which the Canyon derives its name. Charles Toberman, however, is credited with developing the canyon into luxury homes, which included all underground utilities, street lights and concrete sidewalks, the first such development in the U.S. His construction standards were impeccable. All homes were Spanish Revival and were subject to strict building construction codes. Such was the demand for the neighborhood that sales and construction continued throughout the Depression. Most of the original homes stand today, thanks in no small measure to the strict construction codes put in place by the developers.
